“If I had a gun” - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Few songs I’ve heard lately are perfect from beginning to end. This is definitely one of them. Noel Gallagher is back on top form again. In my opinion, its one of his best songs since Oasis’ “Where Did it all go Wrong?” from Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000).

One of my earliest memories was watching the British spy drama The Professionals which starred the late great Gordon Jackson, Lewis Collins as Agent Bodie and of course Martin Shaw as Agent Doyle. Although Martin Shaw has had a prolific acting career since then, I have never had the opportunity to see him in anything since childhood. So it was nice to see him again in an episode of the BBC’s Inspector George Gently with his curly brown hair replaced by lovely silver.

The mark of a great actor is an ability to believably portray a character so different from your own image, persona or how you are often cast. British actor Sean Bean has a long history of portraying tough men from Sharpe to Boromir in Lord of the Rings all the way to Eddard Stark in Game of Thrones. However, his unexpected turn as Tracie Tremarco / Simon Gaskell in an episode of BBC’s series Accused was nothing short of brilliant. Sean Bean proved he is a true thespian.

As a pescetarian, I do indeed heart salmon.

’Your Decision’ - Alice in Chains

One of the first videos I ever saw on MTV Europe decades ago was grunge band Alice in Chains’ ‘Would?’ In my youth I completely missed the point of the lyrics and was more amused by the slicked back hair, pointy beard and no-mustache look of their lead vocalist the late Layne Staley. A few years later while channel-surfing in Southern Africa, I chanced upon the video for their gritty ‘Down in a hole’ which was so raw that I somehow failed to grasp was actually by the same band. In fact, there is nothing amusing about the music of Alice in Chains. Rising to mainstream prominence in the early 90s, Alice in Chains were one of the seminal sounds of grunge music originating out of Seattle Washington. Their lyrics were angst-filled, laden with melancholy and encapsulated struggles with drug addictions that later claimed the lives of both Staley and former bandmember Mike Starr. Well, Alice in Chains have been back together making music for a few years now with a new lead vocalist William Duvall. Although ‘Your Decision’ is a couple of years old now, the song proves they still got it. The video is fascinating and has an eerie ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ feel. It is also interesting to contrast the appearance of lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell in this video with his look for the ‘Would?’ video from 1992 where he is sporting a shaggy beard, a vest, shorts, a pair of all-stars and also rocking a notso fresh-looking blue beanie. In ‘Your Decision’, an older, clean-shaven Cantrell does the lead vocals clad in a black suit, black shirt, black tie and volumes of seriousness. Although the suit fits into the theme of the video, the juxtaposition says alot about all things that come with the passage of time such as life’s harsh lessons, maturity, loss of innocence and ultimately being able to face (or succumb to) one’s demons.
